Y-REC: Youth for Resilient Communities (Erasmus+ European Youth Together)

Youth for Resilient Communities is an Erasmus+-funded project that strengthens young people’s mental well-being and participation through restoring and greening of urban environments.

Many young people need support for their mental well-being and opportunities for participation. At the same time, cities across Europe contain many unused or ecologically degraded areas. Y-REC offers young people opportunities to shape their own environments through urban restoration and greening, in line with the EU Biodiversity Strategy and the Nature Restoration Law, while strengthening their well-being and sense of agency.

Objectives

  • Encourage young people to transform unused or degraded urban areas into green, community-oriented spaces that promote well-being.
  • Engage and empower young people by providing accessible opportunities and meaningful roles related to the topic addressed.
  • Strengthen civic participation by training local action teams to e.g. collaborate with decision-makers.
  • Promote transnational learning and knowledge exchange among youth and experts through digital tools, virtual study visits, and exchange programmes.

What do we do in practice?

The project is built around three main strands, implemented in cooperation with youth, mental health, and environmental actors:

  • capacity-building for youth workers, young people, and local stakeholders, through trainings and materials,
  • hands-on, community-based environmental action to support greener and more vibrant urban environments,
  • communication and dissemination through digital platforms and in-person events.

Y-REC is funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ Programme (European Youth Together). The project runs from 2026 to 2027 and involves seven partner organisations from six countries.
