Safer space principles

We at Youth Academy comply with the so-called safer space principles in all of our activities and events. These principles serve as a practical tool for creating a respectful and non-discriminatory environment for all.

We believe that collaboration and brainstorming work best when everyone feels fully respected as themselves, and no one has to fear discrimination or harassment.

We treat everyone equally in our activities, regardless of their ethnicity, nationality, language, religion, beliefs, opinions, health status, sexual orientation, age, gender, possible functional limitations, or any other personal characteristic or attribute.

To ensure this in practice, we as an organization are committed to following these principles:

  • We respect ourselves and others, as well as everyone’s personal, physical, and emotional space and boundaries. We do not tolerate any form of hate speech or discrimination.
  • We encourage others. We listen to and acknowledge the experiences of others.
  • We do not make assumptions or generalizations about others’ identities or experiences, and we respect everyone’s right to self-definition.
  • We support the participation of all and give everyone a voice. We provide space for different ways of participating, as well as for expressing differing opinions and emotions.
  • We give and receive feedback openly. We accept different views and are capable of discussing them constructively.
  • We understand that everyone can make mistakes. We are willing to apologize and forgive, as well as to reflect on and improve our actions. We wish the best for each other.
  • We intervene when we observe inappropriate behavior or neglect of our shared principles. The responsibility for safety belongs to everyone.

If you notice or experience any form of discrimination or harassment at our events, we encourage you to address the matter with those involved immediately, if you can do so safely. Please also inform the event organizer about the incident, either during the event or afterward, for example, via email.

You can also contact the Youth Academy’s harassment contact person, who will advise, support, and assist those who have experienced inappropriate treatment in our activities.
